Southern Snowflake:
made in Anchor Pearl Cotton but any fine crochet thread will do. You just might have to tinker with the hook size.
hook:1.75mm
finished size: approximately 4 .5" across widest point
This is the British/Australian version: [American version follows - scroll down ]
foundation:
chain 8, sl st in first chain to form ring.
NOTE:
ch 3 at start of row counts as first tr
Row 1:
13 ch [ 3tr into ring, ch 10 ] 5 times, 2 tr into ring, sl st into 3rd ch.
Row 2:
sl st in first 5 ch to bring you to the center of the loop, ch 3, [2tr,3ch,3tr] into loop, 6 ch,* [ 3tr,3ch,3tr,ch6] into loop. Repeat from * 4 times, join to 3rd ch at start of round
Row3:
ch 3, tr in next 2 tr, [3 tr,3ch,3tr] into 3 ch loop of previous round,1 tr in each of next 3 tr, 5 ch,* tr in each of next 3 tr [3tr,3ch,3tr into loop] tr in each of next 3 tr, ch 5. Repeat from* 4 times. Sl st into 3rd ch of turning ch.
Row 4:
ch 3, tr in next 5 tr, [3tr,3ch,3tr ] into 3 ch loop of previous round, 1 tr in each of next 6 tr, ch 4 * tr in each of next 6 tr [3 tr, 3ch, 3tr] into 3 ch loop of previous round, 1 tr in each of next 6 tr, ch 4. Repeat from* 4 times. Sl st into 3rd ch of turning ch.Sew in ends.
The flake will look too 'full' - almost ruffled - but trust me. It pins out.
Stiffening:
Use a [ slightly watered down ] commercial fabric stiffener or PVA glue with a little water. Soak flake. Don't wring it. Pin into position. Look at it from all angles to make sure it's as symmetrical as possible.
I pin my flakes to a piece of polystyrene.
Allow to air dry.
Enjoy.
I hang snowflakes in groups from window frames , doors and the old ladder over my kitchen bench.
Thanks to Phoenix for test crocheting.

This pattern is copyright Susan Iacuone 2007. Please don't sell it... that would be extremely tacky not to mention downright illegal. You can however sell the finished flakes with my blessing.

retty snowflake - although I can't see myself making one (because I can't crochet!!) Gorgeous Christmas tree ornament! _ Love your new livestock - I too have been tempted - and may yet succumb! PS Securiyt word a definite sneez today - hsovnuoz! Bless you!
With winters becoming warmer in my area, I really like the idea of making a White Christmas happen whether it snows or not. And I am, of course, giddy at the thought of your preparations beginning! I love how you "do up" the holidays!!!
I figure that Santa will recognize me by association and the gifts will be amazing...
It's lovely, Susan. Thank you for sharing the photo and your pattern. Like you, I don't see white Christmases or anything else that's white, so the only snowflakes around here are the ones that are made of construction paper or come out of an embroidery machine.
As soon as I finish my challenge snowman pincushion I will be trying out the pattern.
i definitely plan to make that! Thank you. :-)
I wish I could send you some snow. As of today, we don't have any snow on the ground although it did snow during the night, it's melted. I'll put pictures on my blog.
Hi! I was here and enjoyed your blog. Your shirt sleeve tatoo is very lovely. smiles Gina D.
Gina
the sleeve tattoo belongs to Sooziii - possibly the Blog you came here from???
Your snowflake is cute and thank you for sharing the pattern.
Beautiful snowflake Susan! I definitely plan to give it a try. I like your webpage!
Hi Susan. I have a question about this line in Row 2:
* 6 ch , [ 3tr,3ch,3tr,ch6] into loop. Repeat from * 4 times... which seems like you'd end up with a 12 chain at points.
What I did was: 6 ch , *[ 3tr,3ch,3tr] into loop, ch 6. Repeat from * 4 times... Is that how it was meant to be read or is there a slight syntax error in the instruction? This is my first 'project' from a pattern, so being unsure, I did what seemed to make sense and come to look like the photo. I used size 10 thread, and a 1.75mmm needle, and it seems to come to gauge.
Thanks very much for putting up this pattern. Wishing you well, Cass.
- funny that none of the testers picked up on that. Maybe they saw what they expected to see, huh?
Shall fix it now
cheers
Love your snowflake. My sister in Florida asked me to make her some for her Christmas tree so that is how I found yours. We have lots of snow here in Maine. About 2ft with more coming today. Could I send you some???? LOL

Love the snowflake, Susan. I live in Tasmania, and at the moment we have snow on Mount Wellington overlooking Hobart. Have a great day!

Thank you for the delicate snowflake pattern. I know I'll make several for grandchildren this year. Thank you also for printing the American version, it saves so much time converting it myself.
