why does crochet have a bad rep?

It seems to me that in the craft hierachy crochet has a pretty bad name for poor taste, craptastic offerings.

Now given how many cute crochet tops/ shrugs/ were around the last two summers in the stores, I was wondering why this perception lingers. I mean, maybe it's just me but these first two tops are pretty cute, right? They're flattering, they're not garish. I am right aren't I?
Is it just that we are all still doing a style cringe remembering the string-with-holes rainbow offerings from the 70s?

and then I found THESE.

I don't know what's worse ... that someone designed and made these horrors or that someone else feels that there is a commercial market for the patterns.

I'm going to have a lie down now. I feel strangely ill.

These are awful! Are they available online? I'd like to post the URLs on my webzine.

I crocheted a scarf out of Lorna's Laces not too long ago and almost killed a few sock knitters with the stress of it all. It was one of the prettiest things I've ever made! But those pictures? Yeesh! There oughta be a law...

Ick.

Don't happen to have the pattern for that black one do you? looks quite nice (at least at that size), especially if the pale bits are gaps rather than embroidery or something.

Bought a nice crochet style top today that your probably gonna take one look at and say you could have made. Wanted it for this season though.
