I said that I'd tell you about the things stuck on my design wall ... granted I said I'd [probably] tell you about them yesterday and we both know that didn't happen but what the heck, better late than never.
So
the bunch of Japanese fabrics are being auditioned for a commission piece for which I have no actual design in mind.
This will be one of my 'designing-directly-with-the-fabric-and-see-where-that-takes-me' pieces, which is my normal method of working.
The only design brief is that it be Japanese, purple, black and cranes.
The scary thing is that all those fabrics apart from the two plain purples - which I may not end up using - are straight from the stash. What's even scarier is that I started the auditioning process with no fewer than 100 different, mostly black, mostly Japanese fabrics all from the stash
Do you have any idea how many different blacks there are?
No, I don't know either but there's a lot.
I feel like I'm channeling Goldilocks: this black is too blue, this black is too yellow but THIS black is juuuuuuust right.
okay
moving on
Back in 2005, I made this
I feel as though the concept has more mileage in it and the other day I doodled this on a notepad by the phone
so then I drew a larger version.
It has a lot more sections and those teeny slivers may be a pain, so I may yet go with taking the doodle to the copy shop and get it scaled up
...or not.
Anyway, I'm seeing an ammonite - although with minor changes it can be made to look very fern like too.

I do like your spiral thingy!
ooooh! PRETTY! SWIRLY! cool! Those fabrics are very yummy. One day I want to come and look at your stash and just DROOL, I reckon!
Oh yes...I saw a shell! Probably comes from living at the beach and all. I see shells everywhere. It's going to be just lovely interpreted in quilt form. I think I need to send Mommy Sheep your way. She's making great progress with the quilting and I'd love for her to see some art quilts for inspiration!
Wow, what a great collection of fabrics.
And yes, all those blacks! What a pain it can be to try and match a black you already have, especially if it's faded a bit in washing.
Gorgeous - I saw a shell too and love the fabric (I woant to touch them all though!)
Those fabrics are just beautiful. Can't wait to see what you come up with in the end!
I love that you have 100 pieces of black Japanese fabric in your stash. Sounds like a fabric store to me!!
I loved the tour of your crafting area too - that would be a dream of mine one day, to have such a great area - and those tables! Fabulous!
Well some of them are very SMALL pieces !! :]
