Birthday MeMe

I didn't know that this one was doing the rounds until I got tagged by Ms FrouFrou but here's the drill:
you have to log onto http://www.wikipedia.org/ and type in your birthdate [ without the year ]. Peruse the results and give us 2 birthdays, 3 events and one holiday.
So:
16th December

didn't need to look up the birthdays. This part was easy.

Beethoven

Jane Austen

Holiday:

South Africa - Reconciliation Day [ instituted after the end of Apartheid ]

Events:

1653 - English Interregnum - Oliver Cromewell becomes Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland

1773 - Boston tea Party. Members of the Sons of Liberty disguised as Mohawks dump crates of tea into Boston harbor as a protest against the Tea Act.

and I'm throwing in a personal one - 1999 Marc, my husband of 25 years passed away after a long battle with cancer, aged 49. Needless to say birthdays are not exactly joyous any more. Sorry folks. If you were expecting feelgood this ain't it.

I'm tagging:

Sheepish Annie

Bells

Nora

Caitlin

I wish I shared with Jane Austen.

I'm sorry about your husband - I read a while back that people with terminal illnesses often pass away on or just after significant (to them or their loved ones) birthdays and anniversaries - they seem to just have enough strength to share the special day. My dad died the day after his and Mum's 47th wedding anniversary - so no longer a day of celebration for her either.

I'm sorry that this meme was a sad one. Thanks for tagging me (I think). :)

yeah a bit mean of me to dump that on all of you but his birthday would have been july 4 and I'm always a bit iffy around this time of the year. Not on the actual date surprisingly, but Nadie and I both seem to get a bit morose for the week before. We know we do it, but I figure it's probably a pretty normal reaction so I just let it happen and then I'll buck up next week once July 5 roles around.

OMG. As I was waiting for this page to load I was thinking, God I wish I shared a birthday with Jane Austen.

And what did RoseRed say? The very same thing. Well, how about that?

But I really do.

I was tagged for this a while ago. I will do it very soon.

I'm very sorry about your husband, too. No need to apologise for the awful story. It's awful. Enough said.

I'm on it! I almost did this one without being tagged just to see what I'd get.

So sorry that your birthday brings such sad memories. I hope that the other 364 bring good ones for you.

I, too, am sorry about your husband passing away. It's nothing you should feel apologetic about mentioning, though. It's a big event in your life and it continues to make ripples.

Now and then I do some woodworking. I've noticed that some of the most beautiful, interesting pieces of wood are those whose trees encountered some adversity.

Maybe it's the same with people.

no, it wasn't mean at all, just honest. My sister is taking the same sad, difficult journey with her husband at present, and it will soon be her birthday. I'm not sure what I should wish for her about that.

Sorry if my tagging you caused any pain... late in reading this as I've been felled with a 'lurgy that I'm just getting over
