... when you heard that ...
Kennedy had been shot ?
ditto John Lennon ?
or that Princess Di had died ?
in my case the answers are
a] no idea - I was 9
b] in the car on the way to a dental appointment
c] at a dance class with my daughter
and today that list was added to ...
so where were you when you heard that Michael Jackson had passed away of a heart attack, aged 50 ?
- because I didn't have the radio on in the car this morning, I found out when one of the other girls mentioned it over a cup of tea at Robyn's a couple of hours ago
and it feels so odd... even that the eternal Peter Pan was 50 seems hardly credible.
what a strange sad end to an equally strange life
well i wasn't born when kennedy died but i remember when lennon was shot and princess diana died - i was feeding 3 month old emily and michael rushed in fomr the car to tell me - his actual words? 'she's carked it'..
ReplyDeleteand michlae jackons - i had just dropped emily at school and was driving wilbo to the bun shop. it feels so odd - i loved off the wall and thriller and that is the michael jackson i'm remembering. that handsome boy bursting with talent. what can have happened to him that he went so far off the rails???
His death seems very odd, very unexpected. Unreal.
ReplyDeletePoor fellow. He never did have a childhood, so I suppose he spent his adult life trying to fix that somehow. Getting burned during the Pepsi commercial also didn't help. That seems to have set off a downward spiral of plastic surgery.
Well, I was 13 when Kennedy died and I can remember sitting in front of the fire at home and watching the TV news, in my minds eye the picture is clear as day. I can't remember where I was when John Lennon died, but I can when Elvis died. I was driving home from Mildura after shopping, I was very pregnant with my 4th (he's 31 now) and I was at home when Di died. The feeling of shock never changes, it's almost as if we think they are immortal because they are so famous. Sad.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think to put Elvis on that list - but then I can't remember where or what I was doing when I heard that news ...
ReplyDeleteSo sad that what was once a happy, healthy looking young man ended up with so many sad twists and turns to both his life and appearance.
ReplyDeleteFrom the title here, was actually hoping you were talking to Fred and that he came back!
blessings and hugs,
marcy
The first 2 - wasn't born yet.
ReplyDeletePrincess Di - I was over at my sister's boyfriend-at-the-time's house and we were all playing Risk. In the middle of it, his brother strolls through the door, announces "Princess Di is no longer with us", everyone just went "Oh, OK" and it was back to the game. I don't think they were royalists.
Not that I am either, but I thought the passing away of someone like Princess Di deserved a little more.
ReplyDeleteI was in the car at 7:30am listening to ABC newsradio and was stunned to hear michael Jackson news on a serious station. They were saying then he'd been rushed to hospital and they'd bring in updates as they came in. It was an hour before they confirmed it.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan. Never was. But it's a been a sad decade or so for someone who was basically a bit weird and had a strange life.
Susan, I remember where I was when each of these events happened. They had an impact. I really felt sad yesterday as I watched it all unfold on TV, I wonder was he ever truly happy.....perhaps now he will truly find some peace.
ReplyDelete.......:-) Hugs
Well Di as you said we were at dance class and the others I wasn't born for or too young to know about it.
ReplyDeleteFor MJ I was at work, with the Today show in the background. By the time his death was confirmed they had been going on about unconfirmed reports for about 3 hours and I was thoroughly sick of hearing about it. Ticked me off totally that the news segment devoted an entire sentence to the Sydney shooting, and no mention at all of Farrah Fawcett. Are other lives worth so little?
